Internet marketers have called an email list your own personal ATM or Goldmine that gives you money whenever you want.

As a matter of fact, this is correct. Having a list of dedicated contacts is a necessity for your internet marketing company to reach it’s full potential. Clearly, there are some error that people make that you will need to beware of, lest you create problems for yourself. Regardless of what you may have heard, creating an email list can be tough. Prior to making any real money, there will be plenty of issues that can take your company on what may seem to be a roller-coaster ride. Doing some serious research, however, and learning as much as you can from the beginning, you’ll be miles ahead and significantly increase your earning potential.

I wish to share in this narrative some pointers that can make or break a new online business, specifically a few things that you should NOT do.

The first mistake many beginning Internet marketers make is that they give vague instructions to their subscribers. You must be blatantly obvious to your audience while assembling a list. There are people who are going to need clear instructions and will need your guidance to get them where you want them. Internet beginners may not realize what an opt-in form is nor understand that it means they will be getting emails by providing their address; to prevent upset or confused subscribers, this must be taken into consideration. Don’t expect all users to fall into that category. Provide easily obtainable help for those that may require more information or assistance with the process; this builds a good customer service reputation, as well.

Giving vague instructions that leave a potential customer frustrated or confused will likely result in a visitor that doesn’t return to your site. Clear instructions and good customer service is another way to build trust with your site’s visitors. They will appreciate your knowledge and consideration while you will build their trust, all by making sure that they navigate your site in an organized fashion. Make an effort to be consistently accommodating and informative.

Another big mistake is to not have what marketers call a “call to action” included in your mailings. That is, you are failing to advise the prospect just what it is that you want him to do. If you just send out articles or information without having a sales point or creating a sense of urgency to click through, sign up or do something, your readers won’t know what they should do. You cannot simply state “Go here and join.” It’s not Simon Says – they don’t have to do it. You need to maintain the assumption that the people will have no clue as to what is to be done there. Basically, you need to have things set up to be as simple and uncomplicated as possible for even the most computer-illiterate person on the planet. You’ll need to write clear, detailed instructions which leave nothing out. Answer every possible question a person could have, if that person had never, ever been online before. If you don’t, you’ve now lost that potential client. How? Two possible ways: they get to the page, but they have no clue what to do now so they give up; and they now won’t ever open your message again. You will not be able to lure them back. It is critical to fully comprehend your market and structure the entire procedure to be as simple as possible since this is the way you compile your list.

In closing, I’d like to add that you need not be afraid. With the right motivation, some good common sense decisions, and a little extra effort, you’ll have a quality list in no time. It’s a methodology that you will get used to once time goes by. Focus hard on avoiding these common errors, while continuing to learn everything you can about the email list process, and you should do very well in staying above the competition.
